Podback reaches one million household milestone for kerbside recycling collections

Podback, a recycling scheme launched by Nestlé and Jacobs Douwe Egberts UK in April 2021, has reported that over one million UK households can now recycle their used coffee pods through the kerbside recycling service provided by sixteen local authorities.

The London Borough of Havering is the latest partner to join the programme, while Podback’s first Scottish partner is East Ayrshire.

The company collects aluminium and plastic coffee pods alongside other household waste and recycling, which are then reprocessed in the UK. The aluminium pods are used to manufacture beverage cans and other metal products, while their plastic counterparts are used to create supermarket crates, furniture, and other plastic items. The used coffee grounds are processed through anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and soil improver.

Rick Hindley, the executive director of Podback, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in the two years since the launch of the scheme, which now has over 20 brands collaborating with it. Three additional local authority partnerships are set to be launched by the end of this month, which is expected to expand the service to over 1.3 million households by the end of the year.
