HE’S a busy man but still found time to get the girl. Meet this month’s Skip Hunk, newly engaged Danny Walsh, of Pips Skips, Norfolk.
Hi, introduce yourself.
I’m Danny Walsh, and I’m 28.
Where do you work, and what is your job title?
I work for Norfolk-based Pips Skips. My job title is transport supervisor, but I cover nearly every role around the yard.
How long have you worked there, and what do you do day to day?
I’ve been back two years now having been here previously, but I’ve been around the yard since about the age of six; it’s my best friend’s parents’ company. My day varies a lot – I help the drivers where I can, do a little office work, sometimes I can be out driving, sometimes operating the machines in the yard, a lot of yard maintenance (concreting the yard). It’s a very varied and fast paced place to work but I love it.
Certainly, sounds like they keep you busy. What do you like about working there?
I really like the fact that everyone gets on as one big team and we get the job done right first time. Also the fact that there are new trucks, machines and changes made to continually improve the environment we work in.
What’s the worst bit of the job?
The only bad bit I can think of is the smells aren’t great sometimes, and the fact you can’t keep a clean vehicle.
That seems to be a common problem! Tell us about the one day at work you’ll never forget.
There’s so much that happens it’s hard to have one thing that stands out, but I’ll never forget the first time I used one of our Fuchs material handlers and put the cab five metres up in the air and feeling like I was on top of the world.
Where will we find you when you’re not working?
Mostly doing things with my fiancée Alice, seeing friends and spending time with all our family.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Probably got to be the plan that I hatched at work so I could arrange a reason for myself and Alice to have the same afternoon off without her knowing so I could pop the question. It had to be when we were both at work, as it had to be the date 22/2/22.
Romance was in the air that day. If you had superhero powers, what would they be and how would you use them?
My superhero power would be to have the ability to read people’s minds. So, I can always be on the same page as everyone and make everything better.
Probably best you can’t read our minds – there’s not much there, to be honest. Sum yourself up in three little words.
Cheerful, sarcastic and, I would like to think, hardworking.
Let’s send you on holiday – and you get double points if you happen to pick the same destination as your fiancée on the other page…
It would have to be to the Maldives so I could tan right up have a few nice cocktails and a float around on the bright blue sea.
Well done, but to be fair, she did have four possible destinations to choose from. Anyway, who would be your ideal dinner guest?
As much as I’d like it to be either Mila Kunis or Cameron Diaz, it would definitely have to be David Jason: I love everything he’s ever done I think he’s absolutely amazing!
Ever met anybody famous?
I can’t say that I have yet, although I do tell people that Bradley Walsh is my uncle. I know that we’ve done some jobs for famous people over the years so it might not be long before I bump into one.
Well, now you’ve been a Skip Hunk, they can tell everyone they’ve met you! Finally, make us laugh.
I used to date a girl with a lazy eye. Turns out she was seeing someone else the whole time.
Well in our eyes, you’ve been a tremendous Skip Hunk – we can’t wait for the skip wedding!
