Skip hire company recycles its own fleet

AWARD-winning skip hire and waste management company, Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd, has been practicing what it preaches and recycling its own skip and hook loader fleet, with a major vehicle refurbishment programme.

The company, which was named Waste Transfer and Skip Hire Business 2019 at the ‘Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management’ event earlier this year, has engaged the services of another Gloucestershire based company, Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) to give a second life to its fleet of hook loaders and skip loaders. The project involves remanufacturing the vehicle bodies and fitting them to new chassis. Once refurbished the 13-year old vehicles will provide over 10 years of additional operational service.

Simon Allen, divisional operations manager at Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd, said: “We are a recycling company and we don’t want to waste the resources and energy that went into making these vehicles. Not only is this a more environmentally sustainable way to refresh and optimise our fleet, it is also much more cost effective than buying new vehicles.”

RVS has earned a good reputation through its high-quality standards, attention to detail and thorough approach. The five vehicles are a combination of hook and skip loaders, two of which have already been delivered. RVS’ team of engineers put the vehicles through a stringent inspection and auditing process before rectifying all defects and replacing any weak or worn parts as required. The vehicles were then re-painted prior to delivery.

Simon continued: “The vehicles are pristine, inside and out, when they come back. We have used RVS for years, mainly for hire and parts, and we trust them to do the job correctly. They have in-depth knowledge about these vehicles and they know how to do a comprehensive review. Their team of engineers are highly experienced and well-qualified.”

Spencer Law, managing director of RVS, said: “Like us, Smiths are a family-owned, local company and we share the same commitment to high standards. We are delighted they are impressed with the vehicles and we hope we can be of continued service in the future.”
