SHE rose to fame and became the face of countless memes thanks to Radio 1 DJ Greg James, who spotted pictures of her standing in skips to show their size. Meet Non Harries, ‘the Skip Lady’ – and this month’s Skip Chick!
Hi Non! Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m 57 years old and I’m business manager at Greenacres Skip Hire.
And what do you do there?
I’ve worked at Greenacres for three years. My main job is to push paper around my desk – well, that’s what everyone else who works here thinks!
We imagine you’re really the person that keeps it all ticking along. What do you like about the job?
We’re a small family business – 30 years this year! – and the boss, Paul Nicholas, is my first cousin. He started the business with just a truck and ten skips. Being able to work with family is great, and there’s a lovely bunch of lads that work here. The atmosphere is fun and we all like a good laugh.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you at work?
Becoming a meme! Who’d have thought that a middle-aged woman standing in a skip would be such a phenomenon! Radio 1 DJ Greg James has a lot to answer for.
He’s made you famous! Apart from having a good giggle at all those memes, what do you get up to outside of work?
I’m very involved with Fishguard Musical Theatre Society. I’m the Musical Director (I studied singing
and acting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama) and also still perform a bit. We’re currently rehearsing the show Cats which will be performed over Easter.
What’s your idea of a romantic date?
A lovely restaurant with really good food and wine. Other than Huw, my partner, I’d love to spend an evening with Tim Minchin, he’s one talented chap and his comedy is awesome. I’m going to see him in concert in October and am really looking forward to it!
We hope he knows he’ll have a superstar in the audience. Meanwhile, what song really sums you up?
Hen Wlad fy Nhadau (the Welsh National Anthem). I’m a fluent Welsh speaker and being Welsh is what I am.
Easy for you to say, Non! Now tell us a fascinating fact about yourself.
My house was built by my great grandfather; my children are the fifth generation of my family to live there.
You’re quite a star these days, but have you ever met a celebrity in real life?
When I was an actor and singer I met and worked with a number of well-known people. Probably my greatest moment was when I was 16 and sang a duet with Sir Geraint Evans who was one of the most popular opera singers at the time.
You’re full of surprises, Non! Now make us laugh!
What do you call a can opener that doesn’t work? A can’t opener!
Well Non, you’ve been a fantastic Skip Lady and an even better Skip Chick! Thanks for being a great sport. Read more about Non’s time as ‘The Skip Lady’ and her efforts to raise money for the charity, Belle’s Story, on page 12.
