What is the history of the company? Who set it up, and when?
New Town Skip Hire was formed in November 2006 and began trading in March 2007. This was an idea of two business partners Billy Neilson and Martin McLindon. On the first day of trading, the company had one full time employee one second-hand vehicle and twelve eight cubic yard skips. We were pleasantly surprised at the speed at which the business grew and by working closely with SEPA and Zero Waste Scotland, we commissioned our own MRF. This now allows us to recycle over 95% of the waste coming on to our site. In 2014, the company made a further investment by purchasing a Fines Treatment plant which has allowed us to divert over 200 tonnes per week away from landfill.
Is there anyone in the business who deserves a special mention?
It’s a real team effort, everyone plays their part in helping the business to grow and be successful. We were recently a finalist in the Lanarkshire Business Awards. We have also been awarded a 4 star rating by ECO Stars for our work reducing our carbon footprint and fuel reduction. We really do have a fantastic team.
What services do you offer?
The company operates on two levels. Firstly, we operate a skip hire service offering customers the opportunity to hire skips from 2 yards to 40 yard skips. Secondly, we have an excellent infrastructure for recycling all waste. The product we handle is mainly construction waste which includes cardboard, paper, wood, plastics, polythene, UPVC, stone, rubble, green waste, and scrap metals. We also offer services for the safe disposal of all hazardous waste.
What areas do you cover?
We mainly operate in the West Central belt of Scotland covering Glasgow, Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire. Depending on the job and customer we will go the extra mile to fulfil customer requests.
What are the hardest things you face as a business?
In 2012 we were targeted in an arson attack. That really was a challenging time for us and nearly ended us as a company. We worked together to build ourselves back up and are now going from strength to strength. Today the challenge is meeting all the legislations that seem to be being placed upon us. We understand there is a need to control the industry but it seems to be overkill.
What are the best things about working there?
Meeting people from various industries and companies each day is fantastic. The interaction and banter with them makes our day very enjoyable. We are also a very diverse company employing various nationalities who bring their own skills and experiences to the company. It really is fantastic to see how they all interact and work together.
What do you like best about the skip hire industry?
Every day is different. Not one day is the same as the other. Every day brings its own challenges, stresses, and laughs in equal measure. We have both said on more than one occasion that if we weren’t here we would miss it.
What one change would you make to the industry?
Waiting time for permits is a bit of a pain. Customers suffer from it and we lose business applying the law. I think local authority could work to supply the permit quicker than they currently do
What is your relationship like with the other skip hire companies in your area?
We have a very good relationship with several companies in the area. We often carry out work for each other to ensure the customers receive the best possible service and advice for waste disposal.
Has your company developed any new parts of the business in the past few years?
The company is continually investing in technologies and machinery that keeps us at the forefront of the waste industry in Scotland. Recently we installed a Trommel Fines Treatment Plant that has allowed us to divert 200 tonnes from landfill sites each week. Our fleet is also relatively new with the oldest truck being under 2 years old. We’re about to purchase a new hook loader and skip motor.
What makes your company stand out from your competition?
Firstly, we offer a fantastic customer service. Everything we do is designed with customers in mind. We have installed latest technologies to help us to remain competitive. Our fleet is also highly reliable due to the investment made over the last two years replacing old with new. All our fleet is installed with telematics allowing us to monitor fuel consumption, driver behaviours etc. Finally, our staff knowledge is excellent. When a customer calls us for advice we are able to advise them on the best possible solution for their waste recycling targets. Our people really are at the heart of our company.
What do you like most about Skip Hire Magazine?
I just asked Big Billy and he was quite excited about the Skip Chicks – he will love me for saying that. I am a bit more of a bore – I enjoy reading the classified ads. This gives me an insight on what technologies and kit is out there and helping to enhance the industry.
