Alien Life Form Invades Cardiff!

Posted on: August 5th, 2008 by Dave No Comments

ALF---Cardiff-Bay.jpg
A Welsh waste disposal company has cashed in on the recent UFO sightings in Cardiff by using its own ‘Alien Life Form’ to promote its green skip hire service.
ALF Viner, of GD Environmental Services in Newport, spent two days driving across South Wales dressed as a green alien in their famous Subaru skip car (as featured on the cover of The Skip, Issue 29). Alf, who’s now being referred to as an “Alien Life Form” by colleagues, spotted the opportunity to use the recent UFO sightings in a bold attempt to bolster sales for GD’s skip hire service.
Displaying a remarkable grasp of the English language, the outer-space visitor said: “It’s been a mad few days, I came into work yesterday and they had a tub of green body paint and some sponges. I knew it was going to be a long day! But it’s all been good fun and the amount of funny looks and positive comments we have received has been well worth the effort.”
GD Environmental says it has received over a hundred calls to its office from their latest promotion with the world’s fastest skip. Marketing Manager, Gerwyn Holmes, said:
“We have drummed up a tremendous amount of publicity over the last few days. Everyone in Cardiff is gripped by the recent UFO sightings and it’s been a great opportunity for us to boost sales during difficult times with the recent
credit crunch.”
The Welsh capital’s UFO frenzy began on the 7th June when three Welsh helicopter pilots claimed to have chased a UFO across the Bristol Channel. An official enquiry from the ministry of defence has begun into these peculiar sightings.

Dumping Jack Trash

Posted on: August 4th, 2008 by Dave No Comments

A Scarborough based skip hire company, Stabler and Sons, are providing a free skip, complete with cover, to help a customer who became a victim of ‘skip jacking’.
Teresa Merron, of Esplanade, was “furious” after a bathroom suite and other items were dumped in a skip she had hired.
She had paid for the skip for two weeks whilst renovating her new flat but was unable to use it due to the amount of other people’s rubbish that mysteriously appeared.
Ms Merron, a staff nurse at Bridlington Hospital, said:
“I’m shocked when I paid for the thing and someone else is filling it. It’s inconvenient and distressing and I was so cross.”
“It’s an inconvenience as I’ve got a lot of rubble upstairs that I can’t put in my skip. I would tell other people to get a skip with covers.”
“I phoned Scarborough Council and they told me I would be prosecuted if I took anything out and dumped it on the side of the road.”
Harry Briggs, recycling development officer for Scarborough Council, said:
“If a resident employs a private contractor to help dispose of their waste then it is the resident’s responsibility to keep it secure.”
“The council, and ultimately the council tax payer, cannot be held responsible for securing private skips within the borough.”
“While we sympathise with this resident, we have limited powers, in much the same way with regards to fly-tipping on private land.”
“If, however, a skip has been placed on the public highway and is causing a defined nuisance, for example, obstruction to other road users, then action may be undertaken by the highways authority depending upon the circumstances.”
Stabler and Sons offered to provide a smaller skip, free of charge, upon collection of the original skip. They are also providing a skip cover to scupper any further skip jacking plans.

WOOD RECOVERY DOUBLED WITH FLEXHAMMER

Posted on: July 29th, 2008 by Dave No Comments

FlexHammer1800.jpg
Across the valley from Ovenden Moor Wind Farm above Halifax, Envirowaste Services Ltd, perched high on Swales Moor, has taken delivery of the UK’s first mobile IQR FlexHammer™ 1800. Part of the Leo Group of companies, Envirowaste Services and its sister company, The Big Green Timber Company, will initially use the high-capacity, heavy-duty, high-speed shredder to increase the amount of wood waste they recover from 25,000TPA to 50,000TPA.
“The amount of waste wood still going to landfill in the UK is astonishing. The addition of the FlexHammer™ helps us to divert more material from landfill and recycle it into products for a variety of uses including energy production,” said Bobby Barr, Sales & Commercial Manager.
“At the moment we are achieving around a 75% recycling rate from all the material processed through our waste transfer stations. This new machine we help us to increase that to more than 95%,” Bobby continued.
Envirowaste Services pay particular attention to the impact on local residents, ecological considerations and noise and dust reductions.
“This is a necessary part of providing the reliable, efficient and on-time service we are renowned for,” commented Bobby.
He continues, “As well as ensuring a reliable and dedicated service it means we are always one step ahead. This is also reflected in our purchase of the first mobile IQR FlexHammer™ in the UK.”
Set up in 1997 and currently employing 55 people, Envirowaste reclaims a wide variety of materials from their domestic, commercial, C & D, industrial and municipal contracts throughout West Yorkshire. Materials reclaimed include cardboard and paper for pulping; plastics for further reprocessing; wood for board production and biomass; metal; and a range of quality recycled aggregates, including Type 1, 6F2, pipe-bedding and top-soil.
Bobby is enthusiastic about the effect the FlexHammer™ will have on the company’s productivity and finances, “The flexible hammers make this a true multi-material machine. We can quickly and easily move the machine to a different part of the yard and switch from wood waste processing to converting residual waste into RDF without having the laborious task and associated downtime of changing the hammers to cope with the change in material. Material that would previously have gone to landfill can now be converted into a highly sought after, environmentally sustainable RDF product.”
The 875HP Caterpillar C27 engine powering the machine benefits from brand new Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology (ACERT). This saves the company money in terms of lower fuel consumption and benefits the environment with even lower emissions.
Bobby can see an ever closer synergy in future between the waste and energy industries, “Some material just can’t be recycled, but it can be converted into a valuable carbon-friendly fuel that can form part of the answer to on-going sustainable energy production.”
He concludes, “This machine will help us to divert even more material from landfill and provide an environmentally sustainable fuel that can help reduce carbon emissions.”
Weighing in at 45 tonnes, the FlexHammer™ 1800 has a 6m x 2m feed opening and a 1.8m shaft, equipped with either 48 or 24 flexible hammers. The FlexHammer™ 1800 is capable of achieving over 100TPH and is one of the largest high speed shredders on the market.
Foldable walkways, air suspension and hydraulic supports ensure easy transportation between sites. The FlexHammer’s™ unique design allows for a range of particle sizes to be achieved – between 0-500mm – and is renowned for low wear costs, high productivity and long life expectancy.

One for the Laydeees…

This is more like it – this month’s Skip Hunk comes complete with topless, manly skip pose and everything! After all, who needs clothes in July? (Well, anyone living in the UK and Ireland, I suppose, but let’s gloss over that sad weather fact!) It’s time to
meet John from Robb Skip Hire.
Q. Hi John, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?
A. Hi, I’m 27 and I’ve worked here for seven months now. I’ve just been promoted to Sales Manager. I’m sure Carlsberg made this job!
Q. Wow, that’s good going. So, aside from getting promptly promoted, what do you most enjoy about working there?
A. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, having a great laugh with all the people here, and generally taking the p***!
Q. It’s certainly an underrated pastime. What do you like to do when you’re not working, then?
A. I enjoy football, golf and also racing big fast shiny motorbikes (any ladies who want a picture of me clad in leather please write in!) When I’m not doing any of the above, I enjoy being a bit of a party animal!!! He he!
Q. (Any takers, ladies? You know where to write.) So what do you like about The Skip magazine, John?
A. I like all of the magazine, really – it’s a good read. My favourite parts are the pictures of overloaded skips, The Garbage Guru and, of course, it would be rude not to mention all those lurvely Skip Chicks!
Q. Too right! Do you have anything else you’d like to share with our readers or any words of wisdom to impart?
A. There are many things I could babble on about, but I won’t bore the readers too much. Just remember, never wee into the wind! Adios x
(Especially when you’ve got no shirt on!) Thanks John.
